Many Allergy Suffers Find Relief through Immunotherapy

When weighing the cost of events like lost wages and illness, allergy shots can be a cost-effective approach  to managing allergy symptoms.

Immunological or “Allergy Shot” Treatment consists of injecting the allergen that causes the allergic symptoms. These allergens are identified through medical evaluation and diagnostic allergy skin or allergy blood tests performed by an Allergist.

Together we can determine if Immunotherapy is right for you. If elected, normal treatment starts with a build-up phase. Injections (shots) contain increasing amounts of allergens are administered once or twice a week until the target dose is reached. The target dose varies between individuals and can be achieved in three to six months with a conventional schedule (one dose increase per visit).

Once the target dosage is achieved, the maintenance phase begins. Time between injections can be increased and often are scheduled every two to every four weeks. Maintenance immunotherapy treatment is normally continued for three to five years.

Risks with immunotherapy treatment are rare. In rare, extreme cases, serious life threatening Anaphylaxis has occurred. For that reason, immunotherapy should only be given under the supervision of a physician or qualified physician extender (nurse practitioner or physician assistant) in a facility equipped with proper staff and equipment to identify and treat adverse reactions to allergy injections. Patients will stay a specified time after an injection to monitor for any sign of adverse reaction.

The decision to begin immunotherapy may be based on several factors:

  • Severity of Symptoms
  • Length of Allergy Season
  • Inability to Avoid Allergens
  • Willingness to Avoid Long Term Medication Use
