Sinusitis Motion Sickness

News Leader has a brief article about motion sickness that makes mention that sinusitis can also cause motion sickness symptoms. This is another way that sinusitis can affect you. Motion sickness is typically a dizzy feeling or feeling as though you are spinning and is caused by disturbance in the vestibular system. The vestibular system is the inner ear organ. The conflicting signals received by the brain can lead to symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. The sinus cavities connect with the ears and so it is possible that a severe sinus infection could have an impact on the inner ear. Sinusitis is an inflammation or infection of the sinus cavities, which are air-filled spaces in the skull that are connected to the nasal passages. When sinusitis occurs, the inflammation can lead to swelling and obstruction of these passages, causing congestion and pressure in the sinuses. The congestion and inflammation can disrupt the normal functioning of the inner ear, leading to an imbalance in sensory input. This imbalance exacerbates the mismatch between visual and vestibular cues, making individuals more susceptible to motion sickness. Additionally, sinusitis can also cause increased pressure within the head, which may further disrupt the vestibular system and exacerbate symptoms of motion sickness.

This is another symptom that could present with a case of sinusitis, which typically includes headaches, facial pain, and stuffiness. If you experience the sensation of spinning or motion sickness symptoms while not in motion, you may have a case of sinusitis affecting your inner ear. If this occurs while you are also experiencing the other mentioned symptoms of sinusitis you are very likely experiencing what may be a severe sinus infection.
