Allergy Shots and Allergy Drops in NYC

Allergy immunotherapy treats the cause of allergies, not just the symptoms. By exposing your immune system to small, gradually increasing amounts of what you’re allergic to, shots or drops can reduce symptoms and the need for medicine for years after treatment ends. Dr. Arthur Lubitz, a board-certified allergist and immunologist, offers both at his Midtown West office at 244 West 54th Street.

Who it’s for

Immunotherapy can help people with allergies to pollen, dust mites, mold or pets, and people with allergic asthma, especially when medicines don’t control symptoms or cause side effects. Allergy testing comes first to confirm what you’re allergic to.

Allergy shots

Shots are given in the office. During the build-up phase, you come in once or twice a week for several months. After that, maintenance shots are usually every two to four weeks for three to five years. You wait in the office for 30 minutes after each shot.

Allergy drops

Drops (sublingual immunotherapy) are placed under the tongue at home every day, after a first dose in the office. There are no injections and fewer office visits. Insurance coverage for drops varies, so ask the office about cost.

Which is right for you?

Shots can cover several allergens at once and are usually covered by insurance. Drops are more convenient for people who can’t make regular office visits. Dr. Lubitz will help you choose based on your allergies and schedule.
