Allergy Testing in NYC
Allergy testing shows what is causing your sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, hives or asthma, so treatment can target the cause. Dr. Arthur Lubitz, a board-certified allergist and immunologist, performs allergy testing at his Midtown West office at 244 West 54th Street, and skin test results are ready during the same visit.
Types of allergy tests
Skin prick testing places tiny amounts of common allergens, such as pollens, dust mites, mold, pets and foods, on the skin. Results appear in about 15 to 20 minutes. Intradermal testing is used when prick results are unclear and for some insect venom and medication allergies. Blood tests (specific IgE) are used when skin testing isn’t possible, for example with widespread eczema or medicines that can’t be paused.
Before your test
Antihistamines block skin test results, so most need to be stopped several days before testing. Keep taking asthma inhalers and other prescriptions unless the office tells you otherwise. You’ll get exact instructions when you book.
What to expect
Your visit starts with a review of your symptoms and history. Dr. Lubitz then chooses the tests that fit your symptoms, goes over the results with you the same day, and sets out a treatment plan.
After testing
Depending on your results, treatment may include avoiding specific triggers, medicines, allergy shots or drops, or an asthma plan.
Insurance
Most insurance plans cover allergy testing when it is medically necessary. Call the office to confirm your coverage.
