Chronic Hives Treatment in NYC

Hives that keep coming back for six weeks or longer are called chronic hives, or chronic urticaria. They are common, often have no single trigger, and usually improve with the right treatment plan. Dr. Arthur Lubitz, a board-certified allergist and immunologist, treats chronic hives at his Midtown West office at 244 West 54th Street.

Symptoms

Raised, itchy welts that come and go, sometimes with swelling of the lips, eyelids, hands or feet (angioedema). Flares can happen day or night. If your tongue or throat swells or you have trouble breathing, call 911.

Causes

Most chronic hives come from the immune system itself rather than an outside trigger. Some are set off by pressure, cold, heat or exercise. Food allergy is rarely the cause of hives that last for weeks.

Diagnosis

Dr. Lubitz reviews your history and examines your skin. Limited blood tests are sometimes helpful. Extensive allergy testing is usually not needed.

Treatment

Treatment usually starts with a daily non-drowsy antihistamine, often at a higher dose than on the package, under a doctor’s supervision. If hives continue, other options include biologic injections such as omalizumab (Xolair).
