Food Allergy Testing and Treatment in NYC

Food allergies can start at any age, and a reaction can be mild or life-threatening. Dr. Arthur Lubitz, a board-certified allergist and immunologist at 244 West 54th Street in Midtown West, diagnoses food allergies, helps you avoid unnecessary food restrictions, and sets out a plan to stay safe.

Signs of a food allergy

Symptoms usually start within minutes to two hours of eating and can include hives, swelling, vomiting, stomach pain, wheezing or dizziness. A severe reaction (anaphylaxis) is an emergency: use epinephrine and call 911.

Testing

Testing starts with a detailed history. Skin prick tests and blood tests (specific IgE, including component testing for foods like peanut) help show which foods are likely to cause a reaction. When results are unclear, a supervised oral food challenge in the office can confirm whether you can safely eat a food.

Treatment and safety plan

Your plan may include which foods to avoid, how to read labels, and when and how to use an epinephrine auto-injector. For some food allergies, oral immunotherapy (OIT) can raise the amount of food it takes to cause a reaction. Ask Dr. Lubitz whether it’s right for you.
