Zinc Nasal Sprays Linked to Lost Sense of Smell

WebMD has an article about a recent study that shows a link between popular zinc nasal sprays, used to treat cold symptoms, and lost sense of smell in some patients. Last year the FDA warned consumers that zinc-containing nasal sprays may cause loss of sense of smell, called anosmia. The manufacturers of these products claim that reported anosmia is the result of severe colds or sinus conditions that the sprays are used for.Anosmia is indeed often caused by viruses that cause colds and flus and related sinus conditions. A severe sinus infection can lead to anosmia. The study cited in the article claims that the anosmia reported by patients is different than what is seen withe anosmia caused by viruses.
